SEO – Google Search Share rises to 92%

Proof that SEO should be part of your marketing strategy comes in the form of a recent report relating to search engine activity. We all know that Google has been dominant in the UK search engine market for many years now but did you know that in June 2011 Google achieved an incredible 92% market share of all searches made by UK Internet users?!

What’s interesting here is that although Google has increased its dominance within the market, search itself has decreased from accounting for about 40% of total traffic to all websites to around 34% in June 2011. Far from saying search is in decline – I would imagine the number of searches will continue to grow day on day until time in memorial!

No, the reason search now accounts for a smaller proportion of overall traffic being delivered to websites is due to the growth of other traffic sources, namely social media. However it makes me believe that more than ever users wanting to find specific products or services will resort to using search engines to find them. Online marketing is far more target orientated and purposeful than other mediums because it markets to specific user requirements.  After all, the best marketeers have always known that advertising has to be effective and targeted in order to achieve sales.

A quick analysis of the top social networking sites for June 2011, by visits, shows that Facebook has recovered after three months of steady decline whilst YouTube is still growing strongly. Facebook accounted for nearly 54% of all UK internet visits to social networks in June, increasing its market share in the process. Meanwhile YouTube was the fastest moving social network for the fourth consecutive month, receiving  approximately 20% of all UK Internet visits to social networking sites.

After search engines, social networks are the second biggest drivers of web traffic in the UK, with 12.5% of all UK Internet visits in June being driven by a social network .

It would be foolish to write off Google in the social media world. They are currently dominating the search engine marketplace and with Google+ now being rolled out around the world, Google could soon start gaining ground in this important area too.

The whole purpose of the internet is to provide a destination for whatever the user is looking for. Isn’t that search marketing in a nutshell?!

SEO Copywriting

In this article we would like to explain how to benefit from effective SEO copywriting. Search engine optimisation isn’t just about increasing web traffic, it’s also about helping the client convert more of this extra traffic into sales, whilst optimising the page content. We achieve this through SEO copywriting. A good copywriter will create content that is appealing to both search engines & human readers alike. This innovative form of creative writing for websites can be frowned upon if it’s not done in the correct manner.

SEO copywriting is the practice of using existing text and rewriting it for other purposes, namely website optimisation.

To explain it in its simplest form, SEO copywriting is the art of creating engaging content that feeds off of targeted keywords.

If the content you develop doesn’t have the correct keyword density, it can be dismissed as irrelevant or as spam by search engines. Search engine optimisation copywriters will think of different keyword strings relevant to the page as well as the keyword densities when it comes to the content that they write.

Search engine copywriting differs from the regular copywriting technique because the aim is not only to write for the search engines but also for the human readers within the site who are looking for unique information along with flowing, easy to read articles. This form of writing is not difficult, it just takes a little practice and thought around the ‘keyword relevance’.

For example, take this page which is about SEO copywriting. There are various search terms that one could potentially use when looking for this topic.

  1. Copywriting
  2. SEO Copywriting
  3. Search Engine Copywriting
  4. Search Engine Optimisation Copywriting
  5. SEO Copywriters, etc, etc

Hopefully you get the point, but what you need to remember is that if it isn’t on the page how are you going to be found for it by the search engines? So to increase the relevance of the page the search term should be mentioned in its exact form as the chosen targeted term but added in a way that is natural to the reader too.

So, why is copywriting so important to SEO specialists? Answer = In the question lies the solution!

Copywriting is a small but nonetheless important part of the overall SEO process, contact us today to improve your website’s effectiveness.

Ten advantages of Spring SEO

Although you wouldn’t think it, the internet does resemble nature in a way, with it’s seasonal highs and lows. For example, we can expect through the summer months that most online retailers will be quieter as people spend more time outdoors and less time in front of their computer.

Every Summer we all say to ourselves ”It’s time for some R&R” but ironically this is the time most e-commerce businesses should be working harder, to ensure their website is in prime position for the run up to Christmas. In fact Webserve would go as far as suggesting that most of this work should be done as early as the Spring. It’s bizarre to see so many people worrying about it in the latter part of the year, when the rush is already well and truly on!

A good online spring clean is the perfect antidote for the year ahead, getting those glitches out of the way nice and early. If the previous year wasn’t the greatest, sales wise, then it’s also the ideal time to consider hiring an SEO Specialist.

Here are some of the advantages of starting work earlier in the year:

1. After the Winter sales you are probably in a better financial position to do so.

2. They say “The early bird catches the worm” and by starting your SEO early you will leave enough time to get it right before the next busy period…

3. Who wants to be working when the sun is out anyway? Why wait until Summer…

4. Spring is a natural time to reflect, did your SEO company do as it promised? If you are going to change companies, this is the ideal time!

5. You need the best SEO Specialist available, have you checked to see how yours is performing in the search engines? It’s a good time to do some research.

6. Other companies typically stop their SEO campaigns around this time, having been let down or disappointed. Some of them will drop in the search engines as a result and there will be room for fresh blood at the top, so to speak.

7. It gives you time for a full six month campaign before Christmas arrives.

8. Things change every year so it’s vitally important you keep your website up to date.

9. Webserve can almost guarantee your website is missing something that will affect it’s rankings. Isn’t it a good time to contact us and check?

10. Have you even considered how many of your developer’s clients closed down last winter? Surely that’s a reflection on the quality of SEO ‘services’ they provide? Take a look at their portfolios – it sometimes turns up some interesting things you really should be aware of.

Typically if a new client comes to us, in the first quarter of the year, with an established website, I would expect us to elevate it to a good position, whilst providing decent levels of relevant traffic by Christmas – at the latest!

‘SEO Training Norwich’

First Page Result on 18th February 2010 for ‘SEO Training Norwich’ Incredibly this took just 2 days to achieve!!

However, this is NOT what we would deem to be effective SEO as little or no traffic will ever result from it. Yes, it’s good to be targeting all aspects of search terminology relating to your business, but don’t be fooled by those claiming these sort of search terms/results are a great achievement.

‘SEO Training Norwich’ – So, what’s so special about this search term? Well, for one, it happens to be a local search term that Webserve Development haven’t yet targeted!

This article you are now reading, was added on the 16th February 2010 at 15.25 hours, with the intention of seeing how long it would take to rank on the first page of Google for the search term “SEO Training Norwich”. Surely it wouldn’t be that difficult as there are only 12,700 results for SEO Training Norwich and this should be easily obtainable for a local company worth their salt?

As stated in previous Webserve articles it’s not so much about achieving first page results per se but about achieving first page results for relevant, competitive search terms.

There is a lot more to consider of course. For example, is there a call for SEO training in Norwich, or for courses on SEO in the local Norwich area? Is training done in the classroom with theory tests and exams? How much would these courses cost, and how long would they last for?

One thing is for sure though, there are only ten spots available on the first page of Google and only the best will be there…

So, to recap, it took less than 2 days for a true SEO Specialist using a well established, fully optimised website. But remember, it’s those harder to achieve keywords that bare the best fruit. Food for thought!

Ten top tips for effective e-commerce SEO

SEO tips for online retailers: Usually, rising up through the search engine rankings by adopting SEO techniques doesn’t happen overnight . It can take a long time before you’re ranking highly for non-brand keywords, especially with a new domain. Generally speaking, the more competition a relevant term for your business has, the harder you’ll have to work to rank highly for it. With that said, you’ve got to start somewhere with your SEO project:

1. The first thing you’ll need to do is fully optimise your website,  to ensure it’s ‘search engine friendly’.

2. Take care when choosing a provider for your web hosting,  if you are targeting a specific region, say for example the UK, then the physical IP address is country specific so if you are not careful you may find your site listed in Somalia, for example. If your website is,  for whatever reason, being hosted outside your own country then at least ensure that you Geo locate it in Google, as well as adding reference to your origin within the site.

3. Increase Search Engine crawl rates by updating your site’s content every week with new promotions or offers. By simply changing these details you will be adding fresh content that the search engines are extremely hungry for.

4. Ensure your website pages are loading quickly, not just the content, but the images too. Not only is this good from a search engine perspective but it’s also good for your customers. Two possible causes of slow loading web pages are ‘bad code’ being adopted, or a problem with the server you are using.

5. Add a site map and submit it to the major search engines. However, with good SEO this should not be necessary as your pages will get indexed regularly by the search engines.

6. Make sure every page of your site contains unique content. Ensure what’s ‘said’ on these pages provides value to the user, your content needs to instantly grab the reader’s attention. Images too can be as important as text, especially when selling products online. It’s human nature for us to be able to view the merchandise before we part with our hard earned money!

7. Content really is  king. Each and every page should have unique content which appeals to the users and therefore to the search engine spiders too.  Use “recommended productss” to link between similar items and therefore increase their relevancy.  Learn to be specific when writing about a product or service too. As content is so important start ‘blogging’  at least once a week – it will help increase the crawl rate on your main site. Just remember to link to it!

8. Don’t pay too much attention to Google PR as it won’t affect your rankings!! We have many sites with ‘pageranks’ of two and above, kicking sand in our competitors faces who boast sites with higher PR values. If you want to control page rank, use a nofollow HTML attribute on pages such as “terms and conditions”, “privacy policy” etc, PR can also be manipulated if need be.

9. Request links from suppliers, contractors, friends and family who may have websites or Blogs. They will all help with your website optimisation.

10. Hire a good SEO consultant – the sort of person that is prepared to help you understand what needs to be done. In this article we have only touched upon the basics that will certainly help you, however an SEO professional will take your e-commerce site to a whole new level!
