Targeting new customers with SEO

20122012 has to be the year when companies, yet to explore the SEO route, start thinking about the long term ambitions of their business. It really is a case of “wake up and smell the coffee” as far as many firms are concerned and they should be jumping with excitement at the prospect of embracing online marketing opportunities.

Search engine optimisation is an education in itself as it offers companies an in depth look at possibilities they never knew existed. In addition it provides them with a knowledge of what is happening online, in their particular sector. Every new client that Webserve advise is involved in this analysis of data and we use it as a blueprint to take our customers where they want to go. Imagine it as being just like using a road map to reach your destination.

So is it easy? Not exactly, it can be compared to farmers who sow their seeds with a view to gathering the crops later down the line. With SEO it’s important to understand that there are many competitors out there who have a head start. This applies to most sectors now so the first port of call, after the website has been developed, is to catch up with your competitors, let alone overtake them!

Obviously the more competitive the sector you are in, the more work there is to do to get you to that ‘catch up’ stage. But as you draw in that target and the customer enquiries start to increase your business can suddenly expand quite dramatically. It’s all about building a broader base that you can be ‘found’ from.

For Long term marketing, SEO outweighs all other types of advertising as the enquiries continue to flow well beyond the initial wave of investment. It’s a vehicle that will benefit your business for many years to come in fact.

Webserve have the means and expertise to help you target potential clients and turn them in to paying customers. The timescale relating to how long it will take is down to the business owner. One thing’s for sure though, the sooner you take the plunge the sooner you’ll be building towards the end goal!

Imagine for a moment that your website is a new house. As you know, properties have to be built brick by brick, well the same applies to website design and SEO. Whilst some companies ponder over the need for SEO others are busily stacking yet more bricks and continue to grow as a result of ongoing optimisation.

Make sure 2012 is the year that you start laying down the foundations for online success!

Good SEO Practice

Good Seo PracticesSearch engine marketing (SEM) is becoming increasingly popular, people from all walks of life and businesses of all sizes are embracing the web in a big way. The global recession has thrust SEM into the spotlight – as a cost effective method of driving targeted traffic to a company’s website and making a difference to it’s bottom line.

Search engine optimisation (Organic SEO) and Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing are increasing in importance as an affordable means of tapping into potential markets by reaching a targeted audience on the web. Compared to traditional television, news and print advertising, online opportunities are also much easier to measure in terms of results. It’s therefore all the more imperative that SEO practitioners continue to adopt different ‘white hat’ methods to improve the visibility of their clients’ websites.

1) On page optimisation:
The search engine algorithms, in place today, are way more sophisticated than was the case even, say, five years ago. This makes Organic SEO such a dynamic tool whereas previous SEO techniques, that worked well not so long ago, have lost their momentum in the present day. It’s ‘on page reach’ and the structure of the code that supports this content that determines the overall performance of the site.

2) Top Quality Content:
Quality content is the currency of the web. The more unique it is for the searcher, the higher it’s value of redistribution and the more power it has. Everything evolves in life and consumers are no different. The internet has encouraged them to search for products and/or services using search terms that are colloquial rather than technical.

The most important aspect to any SEO campaign is the initial research to discover what exactly prospective customers are searching for.

It should be remembered that not everyone surfing the web is looking to buy a product or service, people are also looking for solutions to problems or simply asking questions they need an answer to.

Commonly, what starts out as a search for general information leads a user into looking for more specific information. This research can then often result in a review of a product or service and sometimes, even a purchase!

3) Social Media:
Let’s be honest about it, social media is not suitable for all businesses selling products and/or services. It’s a very powerful tool for businesses such as travel agents, beauty therapists and music/video distributors, where opinion and recommendations are crucial. Twitter is the current ‘darling’ of the cyber masses having captured the imagination of millions of users worldwide.

The general belief is that to sell products or services on Twitter, you must have lots of followers. This results in people following others purely in the hope they will reciprocate and follow back. Individuals can end up following thousands and in turn being followed by thousands. With this critical mass of contacts he/she usually then starts promoting their services. However, we disagree with this scatter gun approach purely for the reason that these ‘efforts’ have not been targeted.

4) Backlink Profile:
At this point in time, website links are seen as a singular source of authority by leading search engines. If your site has an impressive backlink profile built up through years of hard work by the website owner or competent SEO professional, it can have a huge impact on your site’s ranking with all the major search engines. This valuable work is not something that a competitor can easily replicate either.

However, all links are definitely not equal! The key to a successful campaign is strictly down to the number of unique external domains linking to your site and their subsequent quality. The more diverse these domains are, the more powerful your site will become – as long as all other SEO factors have been correctly addressed of course!

WARNING:

Link Building should not be undertaken by the inexperienced. Without the right knowledge and understanding your site can end up being ineffective or worse -

YOU COULD GET YOUR WEBSITE BANNED FROM THE ORGANIC LISTINGS ALTOGETHER!

SEO for business growth in 2012

It still amazes us when out networking and speaking to people in general, just how few businesses have actually heard of SEO.

“We’re SEO Specialists” we say, when prompted, and suddenly you’ll see the glaze come over their eyes and typically the reply will come back “What’s that?”

Without being disrespectful it would be nice to think business owners were switched on, however it seems on this evidence that many are operating with their eyes wide shut!

It’s always difficult to explain SEO without the benefit of a computer screen, it’s far easier to hand out a business card and let people read all about it here. Guessing by some of the blank looks and general apathy however our instinct tells us that most business owners are unlikely to be looking at the same sentence as you are right now!

It’s hard to fathom, especially as business growth in the UK is more likely to come from the expansion of the internet than it is through the expansion of the economy in general.

Business owners who close their eyes to this inevitable online boom should be aware of the likely long term damage they are inflicting on their businesses. Also, they should be aware of the head start they are allowing their ‘switched on’ competitors.

One of the most likely culprits of online inactivity has to be the mid sized company, run by an older manager or director who is sceptical to change and technology in general. Their failure to investigate what SEO has to offer their business, could undo in a matter of months, what they have worked years to build up.

Then again, one of the biggest failings of those businesses that do make the effort to promote themselves through SEO, is their own shortcoming in not taking the advice they are paying for! This can be the single factor that dictates how effective or not the SEO campaign is. We make it clear when undertaking SEO campaigns for companies, that effort is required on their behalf to ensure successful optimisation results.

A simple conclusion:

  • SEO inactivity in 2012 will affect your business growth
  • Change is happening and companies need to act
  • Clients are in a position to help themselves provided they follow the advice given -

Your website is a vehicle, one that can attract new business:

But it needs the right fuel and somebody behind the wheel committed to driving it forward!!

Search Engine Crawling and Indexing

The post today is about getting a site crawled and indexed effectively by the major search engines. It can be frustrating for a site owner to find that her newly built site with bells and whistles is just not appearing on the Google SERPs for a search query relevant to her business.

It is a good idea to have some knowledge of the factors that influence the crawling of a site and its successful indexing before the site ranks on the SERPs. The site can be built in a user friendly way that allows the spiders to know what to crawl and how frequently to crawl.
Crawling Factors

  1. Links:All major search engines crawl the web through link structures. If a site has a good link structure starting broadly from the top and going down into the category and sub category level, with all the money pages three to four clicks away from the home page, the bots would find crawling the site a lot easy. Placing a sitemap on the home page further assists the bots to find all the content on the site.
  2. Content Freshness and Updates:This is one of the best ways to keep the bots coming back to your site regularly. It is vital to have fresh content updated regularly on a site. A blog will go a long way in achieving this. To a googlebot, new content is a sign of attaching more importance to the site by visiting it more often. There is a Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) component in Google’s algorithm that awards sites with updated content (news sites for example) that invites the bots back to the site for repeated crawling and indexing.
  3. Feeds:If a site has a regularly updated blog or fresh articles posted on it at regular intervals, it would be ideal to have a feed and export it. Google Blog Search and feed tracking help in increasing the crawl activity. When a new post or article is published on the site, the search engine is pinged to let it know that the content has been updated.
  4. Importance of Domain:A powerful domain that has good quality links coming in from diverse trustworthy domains is very important and it affects both the crawl rate and indexing of the site that resides on that domain.
  5. Technical Factors:A site can have spider traps in the form of linking structures that have infinite loop system. The crawling can be interrupted by broken links. The problem of duplicate content with same content found on multiple URLs due to use of a CMS is also possible. All these factors inhibit the capacity of a bot to crawl the site exhaustively.
  6. Increase the Crawl Rate in Google Webmaster Tools:If you login to the Google webmaster tools, there is a provision to increase the spider’s crawl rate. It is a small consolation if the site is affected by problems listed above. On its own, it cannot influence the crawl rate to any extent.

Crawling Factors

You can picture Google (Yahoo and Bing most likely) to consist of a Main Index and a Supplemental Index. The main index consists of the top 10 or 20 results served for important search queries.

If Google thinks a page is not relevant and of high quality, it places it in its Supplemental index. But this index is not visible. A good post by Aaron Well on suplimental index will give you a better idea.

The third scenario is where a site’s pages can be crawled and then dropped from the index.

  1. Content That is Valuable and Unique:To have your pages in the main index, you must provide valuable and unique content. Google is extremely good at identifying content that is unique. Gone are the days when content could be scraped and the introduction and conclusion added to make it look unique. Content that is engaging and valuable definitely play a big part in a page being part of the main index.
  2. Domain Importance:If a domain has variety of good trustworthy domains pointing to it, it helps Google retain its pages in its main index. A good example is Wikipedia. Some of its pages with just one line of content or duplicate content gets ranked at the top of the SERPs. This is due to the domain trust and authority that Wikipedia commands.
  3. PageRank:Pagerank or raw link juice is determined by the number of links pointing to your site and their importance. The internal linking structure on your site is also part of the calculation. Pagerank sculpting has become popular over the past few years to direct the link juice to important pages on a site. Links to less perceived important pages are nofollowed. Aaron has remarked that a certain Pagerank threshold is required for a page to be crawled and indexed by Google.
  4. External Links:If your site has a problem with unique quality content, is on a not so strong domain and does not have enough PR, having a few backlinks from good or lesser known domains to your money pages will be sufficient to get them indexed by Google.Oftentimes, I have seen new sites insulated on the web where they have not linked out or have had a lack of incoming links. A simple step such as submitting to a local popular directory that gets crawled by the search engines regularly is enough to get the site pages indexed by Google. When the search engines see backlinks to your site, they are literally votes for the site as someone on the web thinks that your site is quite important. That is a key factor that gets your site pages indexed and retained in the index.
  5. Other Signals:There is a belief among the wider search community that search and traffic volumes to a site, the number of clicks earned by pages on a site on the SERPs, average time spent on a site etc are all signals which search engines are using to retain such pages in their index. If the number of visits to a site is increasing steadily and users are spending more time on the site, it is logical to assume that such pages will be found relevant to search queries and retained in the search engines’ index. There is no confirmation officially from the search engines themselves to this effect. There is always the prospect of the signals getting noisy over time.

The art of SEO.

The Art of SEOSo is SEO an exact science or is it more of an Art?

Is it a format that is followed or does it rely on the SEO consultants knowledge and his ability to judge where the emphasis of the project should lie.

For those of you new o this you should understand that when surfing on the Internet with the use of a search engine the results shown are from two different sources, organic and pay per click.

Paid for results are there through the amount prepared to be paid by businesses on pay per click whilst the other results are “natural” in other word what the search engine thinks is the most likely match using it’s algorithms.

Algorithms (or rules) are defined by the search engine and to achieve good placement in these search engines your website will need to use SEO (search engine optimisation) this where your website is optimised to maximise the potential of entry onto the website pages.

There are certain rules to follow in search engine optimisation but that’s where it stops when comparing how good your seo specialist is. It is more of an art than an exact science due to the ability of the SEO consultants ability to identify your market place and the opportunities that are available to you..

Having a feel for what has to be done and having good all round experience in life helps with finding and opening potential business opportunities. Awareness of what is “out there” on the Internet will greatly increase a clients potential.

When website owners start understanding what SEO is they are faced with bombardment of articles and misleading information due to the fact that the most important information is closely guarded to SEO specialists chests, as this is their business and they would soon be out of work if everything was just available to read online.

All SEO Specialists have their own ideas on optimisation whilst achieving a website potential comes in very different standards, it really is down to the individual SEO consultant and standard they set for themselves.

Like any good piece of Art planning and ideas are needed to make it stand out whilst the foundations for the end product is very important also.
