SEO – Google Search Share rises to 92%

Proof that SEO should be part of your marketing strategy comes in the form of a recent report relating to search engine activity. We all know that Google has been dominant in the UK search engine market for many years now but did you know that in June 2011 Google achieved an incredible 92% market share of all searches made by UK Internet users?!

What’s interesting here is that although Google has increased its dominance within the market, search itself has decreased from accounting for about 40% of total traffic to all websites to around 34% in June 2011. Far from saying search is in decline – I would imagine the number of searches will continue to grow day on day until time in memorial!

No, the reason search now accounts for a smaller proportion of overall traffic being delivered to websites is due to the growth of other traffic sources, namely social media. However it makes me believe that more than ever users wanting to find specific products or services will resort to using search engines to find them. Online marketing is far more target orientated and purposeful than other mediums because it markets to specific user requirements.  After all, the best marketeers have always known that advertising has to be effective and targeted in order to achieve sales.

A quick analysis of the top social networking sites for June 2011, by visits, shows that Facebook has recovered after three months of steady decline whilst YouTube is still growing strongly. Facebook accounted for nearly 54% of all UK internet visits to social networks in June, increasing its market share in the process. Meanwhile YouTube was the fastest moving social network for the fourth consecutive month, receiving  approximately 20% of all UK Internet visits to social networking sites.

After search engines, social networks are the second biggest drivers of web traffic in the UK, with 12.5% of all UK Internet visits in June being driven by a social network .

It would be foolish to write off Google in the social media world. They are currently dominating the search engine marketplace and with Google+ now being rolled out around the world, Google could soon start gaining ground in this important area too.

The whole purpose of the internet is to provide a destination for whatever the user is looking for. Isn’t that search marketing in a nutshell?!

The Seven Natural Wonders of SEO

If you’ve ever wondered why companies use SEO here are a few things you should know:

  1. Fixed Costs -  The cost of implementing an SEO program is relatively fixed and is totally unrelated to the volume of unique visits to a website. Effectively, the cost per click or per visit resulting directly from the SEO campaign reduces over time.  Following the initial website optimisation costs it is comparitively less to continue an SEO program and further cement your first page positions. How successful an SEO campaign is will depend on two factors, firstly the ability and application of your SEO consultant & whether you have made the effort and followed the instructions they have provided.  Conversely, pay per click (PPC) is essentially a variable cost and has to be used effectively whilst keeping track of your Return on Investment (ROI).
  2. Brand Visibility - When you consider how tough it is to rank highly for competitive terms, for example ‘car insurance’, then it is no surprise to learn how expensive pay per click marketing is in regard to generating site visits. It is therefore extremely difficult to gain brand awareness online without utilising SEO techniques. Staying with this example you can imagine how desperate the big insurance players are to have a first page presence on Google thus driving up the cost of using Adwords. The bottom line is smaller companies miss out, by being outpriced in the stakes to generate leads online. SEO redresses the balance however, and a competent SEO Company can get you competing in this market place within your budget restraints.
  3. Target Marketing – Online search is demand driven, so anybody referred to your site via a search engine is expecting your web page to match their search query. If it does, and your content influences them, they may well become your next customer. Marketing to people who are physically typing in a request for your products or services, and providing a landing page that solves these needs is the most effective marketing weapon your business can posess and one you should be taking full advantage of.
  4. Credibility - Consumers expect big brand businesses to be prominently positioned in Google. Websites with high ranking natural positions will always hold more credibility than those using pay per click advertising purely because people correctly assume that Google will always show quality content naturally.
  5. Consistency - Well positioned websites that are fully optimised consistently generate fresh traffic from relevant search terms, driving continual interest and further enquiries.
  6. Increased Sales & Enquiries - Along with increased traffic, a fully optimised website will also enjoy an increase in sales revenue because more people will be visiting the site and more people will be buying products.
  7. Affordability - There are many ways in which you can promote your website online. SEO aside, the next most popular website promotion method is PPC which in basic terms translates as paid advertisements. As the term suggests a business would pay the search engine an agreed fee whenever this advertising link is clicked on. Pay Per Click can work alongside search engine optimisation to boost results further and can still be a very powerful marketing tool if used correctly. The difference between the two is that SEO gains you natural rankings within the search engines (over time) whereas PPC gives you instant results by advertising your products or services at the top and right hand side of the search results page.

Meanwhile, if you’ve ever wondered what the downside of SEO is I would have to say “there isn’t one, unless you hire the wrong SEO company or SEO consultant that is!”

Changing your SEO Company

It can be a daunting task changing SEO companies, especially if you have some form of search engine placement. But it may be what you set out to achieve isn’t quite happening for you, and you don’t feel the online side of your business is living up to it’s full potential. There can be two reasons for this – either the SEO company you originally instructed isn’t very good, or you didn’t do what your SEO consultant asked you to do. If it’s the latter it’s no good pointing the finger as it’s only going to happen again, unless of course you’re ready to open your cheque book nice and wide and employ someone to write the content for your site on your behalf!

More often than not what happens in the web development industry is that clients simply start out by looking for someone to build a website for them. Often the first port of call is a relative, friend or sometimes even a local Printer who’s offering a web design service. After wondering for a year why there are no enquiries coming from their new sites customers eventually see the error of their ways. Meanwhile, many of the SEO services offered online are from businesses that outsource their work overseas. We, like you, get scores of e-mails every week advising us to outsource our SEO, which we totally ignore. We know the failings and flaws in these services and you shouldn’t be fooled by them either. I can assure you there are no UK websites ‘sitting’ at the top of Google for competitive keywords, that have employed SEO Consultants working from some far flung corner of the world to get them there. If you believe otherwise then please get in touch and we’ll be happy to prove you wrong!!

You see the obvious language barrier isn’t the only problem, cultural differences play a large part too in determining the different ways that we, in the west, search for our products and services. Targeting the correct keywords is fundamental with SEO, and must not be underestimated.

So how do you pluck up the courage to move to a true SEO Specialist?

Unfortunately those of us “in the know” have to tear apart all the hard work put in by the previous developer. Yes, it will make you as ”sick as a parrot” - but at least we do have the medicine to cure you!

It’s painful to see but the majority of websites out there are just awful, they simply don’t work and there are so many factors involved. Ironically, what doesn’t help the cause is that people get too personal with their websites just like they do with their cars. It’s not until you own a few sites that you realise they are simply tools that exist to help get you more business.

The hardest part of moving to a true SEO Specialist is hearing their honest verdict on your existing site. However, you must forget about your current position in the search engines – after all it’s only going to get better from here on!

The truth about SEO is that if it’s done correctly it will be the best value advertising your company will ever undertake. If it’s done badly however it will be costing you business every day. Are you prepared to wait? If not, contact us now!

Beware of SEO salespeople!

There is a world of difference between an SEO salesperson and an SEO specialist. Cast your eye over the following advert from a highly ranked SEO specialist and make your own mind up whether you would be happy to start an SEO package with a company of this nature? It’s a sure bet your website’s position would be of secondary importance to the company’s true objective!

First up, what’s particularly striking is that there is no reference to having any SEO knowledge. Secondly, ask yourself why a company would need sales agents to ‘sell’ SEO if they were naturally any good at it?!

SEO scammers often contact companies out of the blue via telephone or e-mail. Their claims usually tend to be sensational and typically provide figures and claims that make their services appear extremely valuable, it’s very easy therefore for people to get caught out by these plausible Internet salesmen.

The biggest giveaway however, when being targeted by one of these SEO ‘blaggers’ is when they guarantee you success for a small fee. This is simply not possible and should be treated with extreme caution. Some of these so called sales professionals back up their promises by adding “I have an exclusive relationship with Google” or other claims of this nature. Rest assured, this will certainly not be the case!

Effective Search Engine Optimisation takes effort, knowledge and most importantly, PATIENCE… Results are then only achievable if the project is properly funded and has an accountable SEO Specialist at the helm.

Specialist marketing with SEO

You may be a specialist solicitor or engineer, you may have a brand new patented design or quite simply are a builder who specialises in refurbishing churches.

Whatever you do, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) offers providers of specialist products and services something quite different to conventional marketing. Up until the invention of search engines the only cost effective way to advertise a business or service was generally through the local free ads or the yellow pages. On the other hand expensive advertising campaigns that spoke to the ‘masses’ have always been available to those with deep enough pockets.

Fortunately, times have recently changed. Imagine nowadays, a garage offering a bespoke ‘pimp my ride’ service or a company that sells refurbished turbo engines for Bentley motors. What better way to promote your business than selecting your target keywords, filling your website full of relevant information, and, as a consequence, appearing high on the first page of Google – right in front of prospective customers looking for your products or services?!

There is a high probability that the business will attract the enquiry.

With this in mind wouldn’t you expect to hear a stampede of specialists competing to get on the first page of Google? Yet, it is “Oh, so quiet.”

Ironically, getting to the top of the search engines for specialist search terms is relatively easy and inexpensive compared with the rewards it can bring. It’s definitely food for thought and without doubt a window of opportunity that shouldn’t be missed!
